1. Lectures on Beowulf and Modern English translations of Beowulf.
While at Leeds, Tolkien began, but left unfinished, an alliterative verse translation of Beowulf into Modern English, and also worked on a prose Modern English translation, which was complete by the end of April 1926; neither, however, was ever finished to his satisfaction. Tolkien included a few lines of his verse translation in his preface to John R. Clark Hall’s translation of Beowulf, and others have appeared posthumously, the longest passage to date in The Lost Road and Other Writings, pp. 92—93.

2. Partial translation of the First Branch of the Mabinogi, Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed, along with extensive notes on the name ‘Annwn’. [Bodlean Library, Oxford: Dept. of Western Manuscripts, Mss Tolkien A18/1, fols. 134—156.]

3. Lecture The Goths.
In this lecture Tolkien deals with the vanished tradition, literature, history, and the tongue of the Goths. [Bodlean Library, Oxford: Dept. of Western Manuscripts, Mss Tolkien A15/2, fol. 149.]

4. Lecture on dragons.
The text of this lecture reveals Tolkien's thoughts on aspects of dragon-lore not discussed elsewhere in his works. [Bodlean Library, Oxford: Dept. of Western Manuscripts, Mss Tolkien, materials currently with restricted access.]

5. Essay on translating poetry.
An unpublished essay concerning the translation of poetry. [Bodlean Library, Oxford: Dept. of Western Manuscripts, Mss Tolkien A30/1, fols. 121, 107—109.]

6. The New Lay of the Völsungs and The New Lay of Gudrún.
Völsungakviða en nýja (‘The New Lay of the Völsungs’) is a poem of 339 eight-line fornyrðislag stanzas. A companion lay, Guðrún-arkviða en nýja (‘The New Lay of Gudrún’), is a poem of 166 eight-line fornyrðislag stanzas.

7. The Fall of Arthur.
Poem in alliterative verse, written in the early 1930s and abandoned after 954 lines, though various outlines and drafts survive in addition to the final unfinished text.

8. Sellic Spell.
Story, written in the early 1940s as an attempt to reconstruct the Anglo-Saxon tale that lies behind the folk- or fairytale element in Beowulf (here ‘Beewolf’).

9. Reginhardus, the Fox and Monoceros, the Unicorn.
Two poems, composed probably not long before 1927 (together with two other animal poems, Fastitocalon and Iumbo, or ye Kinde of ye Oliphaunt).

10. Tales and Songs of Bimble Bay.
Series of poems, written by Tolkien c. 1928, incorporating fantasy and satire, and centred on an imaginary English coastal town and harbour. These include *The Bumpus (revised as Perry-the-Winkle), The Dragon’s Visit, Glip, *Old Grabbier, Progress in Bimble Town, and *A Song of Bimble Bay; those titles asterisked are still unpublished.

11. The Ulsterior Motive.
Discursive essay, written in response to the posthumous publication of C.S. Lewis’ Letters to Malcolm, expressing Tolkien’s hurt at anti-Roman Catholicism from Lewis.

12. A glossary-index to The Lord of the Rings.
Wayne Hammond and Christina Scull have referred freely to this unfinished index in their notes on various topics in The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion (2005), but otherwise it remains unpublished.

13. Essay, written in response to seeing Pauline Baynes’ depiction of various characters from The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien described each member of the Fellowship of the Ring and some other persons as he pictured them — an invaluable aid to any illustrator of his work. [Bodlean Library, Oxford: Dept. of Western Manuscripts, Mss Tolkien A61, fols. 1—31.]

1. Lectures on Beowulf and Modern English translations of Beowulf.

?Late 1920s or 1930s Tolkien writes two companion poems, Volsungakvida en nyja ('The New Lay of the Volsungs') and Gudrunarkvida en nyja ('The New Lay of Gudriin), of 339 and 166 eight-line stanzas respectively. After the Second World War he will have an amanuensis typescript made of them; otherwise each survives only in a fair copy manuscript. On 29 March 1967 Tolkien will write to *WH. Auden, who had sent him part of the Elder Edda translated into Modern English: 'In return again I hope to send you... a thing I did many years ago when trying to learn the art of writing alliterative poetry: an attempt to unify the lays about the Volsungs from the Elder Edda, written in the old eight -line fornyrdislag stanza' (Letters, p. 379). See note.

Late 1920s or 1930s T.A. Shippey refers to these poems in J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century (2000), p. 278, but there is no basis for the title Sigurdarkvida hin nyja. See instead his Road to Middle-earth (1982, 2nd edn. 1992), p. 277.

7. The Fall of Arthur
Early 1930s Tolkien writes a substantial part of a long poem, The Fall of Arthur (*Arthur and the Matter of Britain).

Todd Jensen in 'Tolkien and Arthurian Legend', Beyond Bree, November 1988.

John, 13.03.2008, 08:15:

8.
Jones had also planned to publish Tolkien's "Sellic Spell," a reworking of the folktale underlying Beowulf, but the Welsh Review folded in 1948, and Jones returned the manuscript to Tolkien with
regret. "Sellic Spell" remains unpublished.
The manuscript of the story in now in the Bodleian Library at Oxford.

9.

c. 1928 In or around 1928 Tolkien begins to write a series of poems which he calls collectively *Tales and Songs of Bimble Bay. These include The Bum-pus (see *Perry-the-Winkle), *The Dragon's Visit, *Glip, Poor Old Crabbler (later Old Grabbler), *Progress in Bimble Town, and A Song of Bimble Bay. - Tolkien also makes many paintings and drawings (see also entries for July through September), including The Wood at the World's End (in two versions; Artist and Illustrator, fig. 60); a decorative frieze with a peacock; a flowering tree with a bird (Pictures, no. 42); a page with drawings of realistic flowers, possibly to precede a 'Tree of Amalion' drawing (see entry for July-August 1928); and Maddo, a gloved hand crawling down a curtain, and Owlamoo, a sinister owl-like creature, both drawn to exorcise bogeys imagined by young Michael Tolkien (Artist and Illustrator, figs. 78-79). The preceding are all dated '1928'. An undated drawing of three friezes in The Book oflshness, incorporating favourite motifs of waves, clouds, mountains, moons, and stars (Artist and Illustrator, fig. 59), is probably also made around this time, as are two unusual
drawings in a geometric style, one entitled Moonlight on a Wood, accompanying but not part of The Book of lshness {Artist and Illustrator, fig. 61; Life and Legend, p. 5).

J. R. R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth -
Tolkien knew little, if any, of Lewis's internal struggles regarding
a possible move to the Roman Catholic Church, and his most scath-
ing attack on Lewis, "The Ulsterior Motive," remains unpublished
and unavailable to the general or academic public. Tolkien wrote it
within a year of Lewis's death in 1963. He nominally wrote it as a
response to Lewis's posthumous Letters to Malcolm, a work Tolkien
considered "distressing and in parts horrifying."48 Only a few people have read the entire manuscript , and from the few available glimpses of it, "The Ulsterior Motive" seems to digress into a serious analysis of Tolkien and Lewis's friendship. In it, for example, Tolkien remembers a conversation with Lewis in which Tolkien noted that St. John served as his patron saint. "Lewis stiffened," Tolkien wrote.
[H]is head went back, and he said in the brusque harsh tones which
I was later to hear him use again when dismissing something he
disapproved of: 'I can't imagine any two persons more dissimilar.'
We stumped along the cloisters, and I followed feeling like a shabby
little Catholic caught by the eye of an 'Evangelical clergyman of
good family' taking holy water at the door of a church.49
Lewis's personality was such that he most likely forgot this comment
a moment after making it.50 Like his character Treebeard, though,
Tolkien forgot very little, and Lewis's dig remained strong in his
memory for several decades. Tolkien further argues in "The Ulsterior
Motive" that Lewis was "keen-witted rather than clear-sighted."51 In
the margins of his own copy of Letters to Malcolm, Tolkien wrote
that far more than being about prayer, the book was really about
how Lewis prayed. It was according to Tolkien autobiographical, which
he thought was the case with all of Lewis's works.52 On the whole,
"The Ulsterior Motive" provides strong evidence that Tolkien, one
of the two men most instrumental in Lewis's conversion to Chris-
tianity, resented that Lewis never became Roman Catholic but in-
stead re-awoke to "the prejudices so sedulously planted in childhood
and boyhood."53

Niekas.

3. Black & White Ogre Country, The Lost Tales of Hilary Tolkien
edited by Angela Gardner
illustrated by Jef Murray

Publisher: ADC Publications Ltd, Moreton in Marsh, UK
Publication Date: 26 January, 2009

“The book was based on a notebook kept by Hilary Tolkien over many years, and it included fanciful tales that were likely invented by Hilary and J.R.R. during their adventures together as young boys. These were in the form of short stories about ogres, witches, and the curious folk whom the Tolkien brothers encountered in their childhood. But the short tales go on from there to include reminiscences about World War I and the changes that Hilary saw in the English countryside over the decades... The notebook was found among letters by and to Hilary that had been kept by his grandson, Chris Tolkien. Chris showed these materials to Andy Compton and Angie Gardner, and he asked whether they would publish them. Angie felt that there was so much material, that it would be best appreciated separated into two volumes. The first is based on the notebook, and the second will include the letters, photos, etc. This first book is by way of the first chapter of the bigger Biography.” — Jef Murray

10. Languages, Myths and History: An Introduction to the Linguistic and Literary Background of J. R. R. Tolkien's Fiction
by Elizabeth Solopova

Publisher: North Landing Books
Publication Date: June 30, 2009

Languages, Myths and History provides brief introductions to Old Norse, Old English, Gothic and Finnish languages and literatures, and discusses key aspects of their influence on Tolkien's fiction. The book demonstrates how Tolkien's literary-critical, philosophical and moral ideas, particularly his understanding of heroism and courage, were inspired by medieval literature and folklore. The book offers an overview of Tolkien's invented languages and his principles for language creation. In addition it provides a summary of Tolkien's academic career.

Features include:
- chapters on languages and literatures which inspired Tolkien as a writer;
- a discussion of Tolkien's literary-critical and philosophical ideas influenced by medieval literature, such as his 'theory of courage';
- a detailed overview of the history and language of the Goths, rarely offered as part of university courses, and little known to students of literature;
- an extract from Jordanes's Gothic History and a discussion of its influence on Tolkien;
- an introductory discussion of Tolkien's languages and alphabets, a notoriously confusing subject, rarely approached in an accessible, non-technical way

by Mark T. Hooker

Publisher: Llyfrawr
Publication Date: June 17, 2009

This new book, The Hobbitonian Anthology, is the second volume of articles by Mark T. Hooker that picks up where his A Tolkienian Mathomium left off.
The collection of articles in The Hobbitonian Anthology is a miscellany, but largely linguistic in nature. Part One of the book is about names: Bilbo, Bag-End, Boffin, Farmer Maggot, Puddifoot, Stoor, Huggins, Tom Bombadil, The Ivy Bush, The Golden Perch, and a bevy of place names in the neighborhood of Evesham, the ancestral home of Tolkien's mother's family, the Suffields. It discusses their meanings and their English analogues, both from a linguistic, a geographic, and biographic viewpoint. The articles in Part Two explore the terms bootless, nine days' wonder, confusticate and bebother, hundredweight, and leechcraft.

edited by Angela Gardner and Neil Holford

Publisher: ADC Publications Ltd, Moreton in Marsh, UK
Publication Date: 26 March 2010

The book includes Hilary’s letters from the trenches during the Great War and letters from Ronald covering a period of almost forty years. There are also letters from, amongst others, Hilary’s wife Magdalen, Edith Tolkien, Ronald and Edith’s children, Jane Neave, John and Emily Jane Suffield, the Incledons, and Arthur and Mabel Tolkien. The book also includes photographs of Ronald and Hilary from as early as 1895 to show them and their families through the years; and previously unpublished paintings by Mabel and Hilary Tolkien.

2. On Tolkien: Interviews, Reminiscences, and Other Essays
edited by Douglas A. Anderson, Marjorie J. Burns

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company, USA
Publication Date: 30 January, 2009 (but not published yet)

A collection of rare interviews and personal reminiscences found nowhere else. Beginning with a short interview with Tolkien from 1957 the book gives a developing picture of Tolkien the man and writer, first in his own voice and later from recollections of his friends and family.
Among the unique pieces are two lengthy recorded interviews that reveal Tolkien’s conversation style. Also included are a discussion by Priscilla of her father’s painting and drawing, and Christopher’s description of the making of The Silmarillion. We hear, too, from Tolkien’s colleagues and contemporaries at Oxford and in publishing, who discuss how Tolkien felt about his work’s reception in the wider world.

http://tolkien.su/forum/index.php/topic,21093.msg492747.html#new

Walking Tree Publishers...

Arne Zettersten - J.R.R. Tolkien's Double Worlds and Creative Process: Language and Life. 256 p. Palgrave Macmillan; (29 April 2011)

Carl Phelpstead - Tolkien and Wales: Language, Literature and Identity. 224 р. University of Wales Press (30 April 2011)

Andrew H. Morton - Tolkien's Bag End. 88 pages
Publisher: Brewin Books (22 Jun 2009)

Andrew H. Morton - Tolkien's Gedling 1914. 104 pages
Publisher: Brewin Books (31 Mar 2008)

Tolkien's Oxford, by Robert Blackham

J. R. R. Tolkien, Wayne G. Hammond, Christina Scull  - The Art of the Hobbit [Special Edition]
Publisher: HarperCollins;(27 Oct 2011)

J.R. R. Tolkien, John Rateliff - The History of the Hobbit: One Volume Edition
Publisher: HarperCollins;(27 Oct 2011)

On Tolkien: Interviews, Reminiscences, and Other Essays
edited by Douglas A. Anderson, Marjorie J. Burns
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company, 30 January, 2012

Wheelbarrows at Dawn: The Lost Box of Tolkien Memories
edited by Angela Gardner and Neil Holford
Publisher: ADC Publications Ltd, Moreton in Marsh, UK
http://www.tolkienguide.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1311&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&type=&mode=0&start=15
