About the Book
Kullervo son of Kalervo is perhaps the darkest and most tragic of all J.R.R. Tolkien’s characters. ‘Hapless Kullervo’, as Tolkien called him, is a luckless orphan boy with supernatural powers and a tragic destiny.

Brought up in the homestead of the dark magician Untamo, who killed his father, kidnapped his mother, and who tries three times to kill him when still a boy, Kullervo is alone save for the love of his twin sister, Wanona, and guarded by the magical powers of the black dog, Musti. When Kullervo is sold into slavery he swears revenge on the magician, but he will learn that even at the point of vengeance there is no escape from the cruellest of fates.

Tolkien himself said that The Story of Kullervo was ‘the germ of my attempt to write legends of my own’, and was ‘a major matter in the legends of the First Age’. Tolkien’s Kullervo is the clear ancestor of Túrin Turambar, tragic incestuous hero of The Silmarillion. In addition to it being a powerful story in its own right, The Story of Kullervo – published here for the first time with the author’s drafts, notes and lecture-essays on its source-work, The Kalevala – is a foundation stone in the structure of Tolkien’s invented world.

Critical Praise
Praise for J.R.R. Tolkien:
‘One marvels anew at the depth, breadth and persistence of J.R.R. Tolkien’s labour. No one sympathetic to his aims – the invention of a secondary universe – will want to miss this chance to be present at the creation.’

UPD:

UPD:
Tolkien Studies 7":

Hello! Could you, please, give more detailed information about "The Story of Kullervo", 9780008131364? It would be very useful to see at least its summary. Will it have some new materials in comparison with the ones published in the "Tolkien Studies (Volume 7)" or not (or the insignificat amount)?

The reason I ask about it is that I've already pre-ordered "The art of LOTR" (being sure it's a new Tolkien materials treasury) and I would like to realize the value of the forthcoming edition of "The Story of Kullervo".

The description on your page (http://www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780008131364/the-stor) says: "The Story of
Kullervo – published here for the first time with the author’s drafts, notes and lecture-essays on its source-work...".

But in "Tolkien Studies (Volume 7)" were published all the materials listed in your book description:
1) “The Story of Kullervo” (+ NOTES AND COMMENTARY),
2) Essays on“The Kalevala” or Land of Heroes:
- Manuscript draft (+ NOTES AND COMMENTARY)
- Typescript draft (+ NOTES AND COMMENTARY)
(All materials were transcribed and edited by Verlyn Flieger)

So, does "for the first time..." mean "for the first time as a separate book" or the materials were essentially extended for this book edition?

Thank you very much for the answer!

Подводя итог, хочу заметить, что исчерпывающий ответ на мой вопрос даёт фраза "This is its first appearance in book form")) очевидно, это впервые в форме отдельной книги.
