Marinier, a big THANX! for your time and effort in making this one. Virtual, too, for filling the gap.

I've checked addenda and corrigenda to all three editions on the authors' site and there was only one on p. 33 in the first two editions which was incorporated in the third edition. That means the pp. 29-32 from the first (Virtual's) edition are identical to the missing pp. 29-32 from the third (Marinier's) edition, hence we can say we have a complete scan of the third edition.

Now, in my opinion, there's only one crucial scan left to do: The Lord of the Rings 60th Anniversary Edition (one-volume hardcover, illustrated by Alan Lee). Marinier, would it be possible for you to scan your copy at some point? All ebook editions to date were based on the 50th Anniversary Edition with various typos throughout...

I have only one physical copy of LOTR in my library, and this is the illustrated one https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780007525546/the-lord-of-the-rings/

The dimensions of this book makes impossible for me to do double-page scans on my A4 scanner. It just doesn't fit. Scanning one page at a time would make no sense for this huge and heavy book of 2,4 kg (and may be dangerous for the book itself). The only way to get a 60th Anniversary text looks like to scan three volumes form this 4-volumes set https://www.harpercollins.co.uk/9780007581146/the-lord-of-the-rings-boxed-set/

It has the same text and even fits perfectly the Reader's Companion pagination references. But I do not have this edition. Maybe someone who have that set can scan.

Marinier: I understand.

Would it be possible then for you to make photographs of your entire edition?
You made a great overview back in 2014, but could you expand it to the whole book?

I have the 50th edition rather than the 60th so sadly can't help with a scan.

But do we have a list of known typos and errors present in the 50th? Surely I could bring the corrections into the 50th and thus negate the need for a scan?

Naugperedhel, рад стараться)

Guys, now I want to share with you my final result of 3-days of work with A Reader’s Companion.
I wanted it to be a handy PDF-version, so my version has:

- the digital contents menu (that opens a desired chapter of the book when you click on the title)
- the automated text recognition lay (with no human check) that allows to perform a full-text search
- nice and close to the real book look (I mean double page view especially)

I have also noticed that if I open this PDF with MacOS native preview tool (which manages the PDF files much faster the any Adobe product on MacOS) it gives no option (unlike Adobe Reader) to select how to use the 1st cover-page when choosing the double-page view. So in some circumstances it may create problems if you want to use it, but without Adobe products. I know that you all have different skills, but the best product is the one ready to use right out of the box. This is why I created 2 versions of the same PDF. One is just with +1 blank page after the cover. It should help if any of you experience difficulties with double-page view adjusting in the preview program that you use. There are no other differences between two files in the folder, that I share below.

Folder with 2 Final versions of "The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion" (2014, 3rd Ed) Version with Digital Contents Menu (MEGA) (2 files * 90 mb).

Hello all.

https://mega.nz/#F!ZhsA1QDS!NVa-6VC43ys3EnDAkMw9aA

Issues 1-12, 33, 38-44 of Mallorn and issue 1 of Anduril from 1972.

That should give you all a complete run of Mallorn from 1 to 58 but in case you are missing any issues I have added the rest in in the included folder.

First, philthehip, thank you so much for all the great work you're doing!

I've been trying to sort all of my Tolkien magazines and still seem to be missing a few of Mallorns. The link seems to be dead, so, if anyone has a working one of 1-12 and 38-44, I'd be so very thankful!

Has anyone seen a scan of The Hobbit Sketchbook?
This is it https://www.bookdepository.com/Hobbit-Sketchbook-Alan-Lee/9780008226749

Or maybe one of us posses a copy of it.
We'd be all grateful for scan or at least for a bunch of page-after-page photo of it.

I have it as part of the recent box-set with The Lord of the Rings.

I am planning to scan some other bits like the Sir Gawain Deluxe frontis, editors note and a few other bits from it so I will add it to the list. I don't have a scanner personally but my Moma-in-Law has one and I will be using it soon.

Does anybody have Home-3 Hardback? There is a colourful page of manuscriptю I need a best scan that you could provide.

Есть у кого-нибудь 3 том в твердом переплёте? Там цветная вклейка со страницей рукописи. Нужен качественный скан.

I found that I haven`t a pdf of Tolkien the Maker of ME. Not photos, but real pdf, without deformations of pictures. Does anybody have it?

I doubt it exists. I was able to take the photos of each page only (when I uploaded it here), because its dimensions were incompatible with my scanner. Has anyone processed it and created pdf? I haven't seen any mentions about it on forum.

I checked the book against the scanner I am using and it is also too large for the flatbed sadly.

We have 2 identical Huawei phones at home and I am currently in the planning stage for a book cradle that would enable me to photograph larger books with both phones taking odd and even numbers respectively from the same distance and condition each time. Once I have figured it all out it will make it much easier and more professional a finish with these difficult large books.

Hello all,

I have completed my first book scan, I am not sure of the quality but I am comparing that to the amazing work that comes from Marinier. I am up against a master so I hope my efforts enable you all to read the Hobbit Sketchbook. The scanner I have access to is only 300dpi but I scanned to TIFF and then compiled them in Adobe Acrobat DC. I have retained the 3.7GB of TIFF's if anybody feels they can put a better version together. The book had a rather tight spine so I struggled a little at times to keep the odd page from getting a little dark at the spine edge but all the text is readable and images are mostly intact. I should have picked an easier book to learn on but I will improve I am sure. https://mega.nz/file/h08iWQLQ#gtggbAPmHP38aZSTK_8Hl-LFHBu8kOZ_jvQi3oPsJVE

I will move onto the next on my list next week.

I have also scanned the 2 manuscript pages and editor's note from the new Sir Gawain Deluxe. They are the only 'new' pieces in it so no reason to scan the entire thing. https://mega.nz/folder/9xEmQQIA#4XwLbWli5kmU2lOxYLpmgg

Plus latest Tolkien Society publications.

Yep I will scan the Garth book next. I am still working my way through it currently, it is put together in such a way that it invites dipping in and out so I have been treating it that way while working on other projects and subjects. As John Garth himself mentioned, it has panels that one can read while reading the book or can read the main text and then come back in for the paneled text. . It cements some inspirations that we all know well enough, he offers solid information and when he can not offer concrete results he is clear about it. So I will reserve judgement until I really study the content but so far I would say it is a really great work. One I think I will find useful in future research.

As for scanning, I will do the Garth, then I have the following on my to do list:

Tolkien, Race and Cultural History - D. Fimi
Tolkien's Gedling 1914 - A. Morton and J. Hayes
Tolkien's Lost Chaucer - J. Bowers (although I may just purchase the eBook of this one)
Tolkien Treasures - C. Mclwaine (this is very similar to Maker of Middle-earth but is much shorter, still a great book though will brilliant artwork reproductions)
Letters from Father Christmas Deluxe edition (although, the hardback version coming out later this year will be a corrected version of this release so I may well wait until I have that)

I will scan the original missing pages from A Question of Time as the version I offered up here a little while ago used photographed images and scans will make those pages much better.

I would also like to do The Hobbit using the facsimile edition. I have the slipped version and the gift-set so I may well do that one with no spine so it is completely flat. I will see how that sits on the scanner.

So lots to do. I will try to get a book done a week.

There a lot of changings, even in title, in the new Garth`s book. There are 2 editions, in fact.
Also, when work on translation, Constantin and Sergey found a lot of mistakes and sent it to Garth, he accept it and incorporate into the 2nd edition.

So, I advise you to await couple months and buy a book, or download pdf nearly October-November.
