Soon they were leading their ponies in single file over the rim and down the long northward slope of the hill, down into a foggy sea. As they went down the mist became colder and damper, and their hair hung lank and dripping on their foreheads.
The marshes were bewildering and treacherous, and there was no permanent trail even for Rangers to find through their shifting quagmires. The flies began to torment them, and the air was full of clouds of tiny midges that crept up their sleeves and breeches and into their hair.

'You are full of courtesy this morning,' laughed Legolas. 'But maybe. if we had not arrived, you would already have been keeping one another company again.'
'Maybe; and why not?' said Pippin. 'We had foul fare with the Orcs, and little enough for days before that. It seems a long while since we could eat to heart's content.'
'It does not seem to have done you any harm,' said Aragorn. 'Indeed you look in the bloom of health.'
'Aye, you do indeed,' said Gimli, looking them up and down over the top of his cup. 'Why, your hair is twice as thick and curly as when we parted; and I would swear that you have both grown somewhat, if that is possible for hobbits of your age. This Treebeard at any rate has not starved you.'
But Frodo sprang up, and drew Sting from its sheath. With his left hand he drew back Gollum's head by his thin lank hair, stretching his long neck, and forcing his pale venomous eyes to stare up at the sky.
`I think we shall get tired of that word soon,' said Sam. 'But never mind. I'll wake master up.' Gently he smoothed the hair back from Frodo's brow, and bending down spoke softly to him.
`Wake up, Mr. Frodo! Wake up! '
All the children born or begotten in that year, and there were many, were fair to see and strong, and most of them had a rich golden hair that had before been rare among hobbits.

Подборка более или менее полная - в том смысле, что в прочих местах идут повторы, сообщающие нам, что волосы хоббитов именно что коричневые и безусловно курчавые.
Что нам сообщают источники? Толстые и курчавые волосы на ногах (а точнее,
на ступнях), очень похожие на волосы на их головах, обычно коричневые. Далее хоббитские лапы в деталях не описаны, поэтому придется опираться на схожесть их с головным покровом.
Безусловно, было бы очень заманчиво прийти к мысли, что толстые курчавые коричневые волосы сродни классической негритянской шевелюре. Тогда в значительной мере стала бы понятна и выносливость хоббичьих лап-без-обуви: на ногах все время что-то вроде многослойных носков из жесткой шерсти, это обеспечивает необходимую теплоизоляцию, отчасти смягчает удары, промочить ноги насовсем можно, но трудно. Мы, правда, умолчим о том, что пыль и грязь ноги с шерстью, должно быть, собирают еще лучше, чем ноги без шерсти. =)
Относительно плотности волос в цитированном выше сообщается, что, во-первых, в волосы могли пролезть летающие насекомые. Это, конечно, печально для хоббитов, но печально также и для нашего предположения о негритянской густоте. Хотя можно предположить, что на болотах водились какие-то аналоги
Lipoptena cervi, что позволяет нам держаться прежнего курса. Во-вторых, Гимли замечает, что волосы на хоббитских головах после пребывания у Фангорна стали вдвое толще и курчавее... тут уже приходится смириться с мыслью, что исходное состояние позволяло почувствовать разницу.
Относительно курчавости последний момент тоже годится; плюс к тому сообщается, что туман над Barrow-downs (известными в одном из переводов как Упокоища) намочил волосы до того, что они выпрямились, налипли на лбы и с них стала стекать вода. В общем, приличных негров не выходит: все какая-то некондиция.
И, наконец, длина.
Ситуация с лбами говорит нам, что ежик хоббиты не носили; интересно также, что Фродо сушил волосы после банных процедур. По моим соображениям, при длине волос до 70-80 мм это лишнее.
Фродо вытаскивает Сэма из воды за волосы, а Углук ставит Пиппина на ноги, ухватив за них же. Те же 80 мм минимум, я думаю, а чтобы за мокрые надежно схватиться, может быть, и 100.
Наконец, на пороге Мордора Сэм смахивает с бровей Фродо прядь волос. Те же 100 мм или чуть больше в моем случае, а для хоббитов можно внести какой-нибудь понижающий коэффициент, но головы-то у них от человеческих отличались не в той же пропорции, что рост, очевидно.
Старина Смеагол и дети с золотыми волосами примеры нехарактерные и даны на всякий случай. =)

"Yes, lots," said Bilbo, before he remembered not to give his friends away. "No, none at all, not one," he said immediately afterwards.
"What d'yer mean?" said Bert, holding him right away up, by the hair this time.
He looked at the 'black emperors' for a long time, and enjoyed the feel of the breeze in his hair and on his face; but at length the cries of the dwarves, who were now simply stamping with impatience down below, reminded him of his real business.
The afternoon was turning into evening when he came out again and stumbled and fell in a faint on the 'door-step.' The dwarves revived him, and doctored his scorches as well as they could; but it was a long time before the hair on the back of his head and his heels grew properly again: it had all been singed and frizzled right down to the skin.

I picture a fairly human figure, not a kind of 'fairy' rabbit as some of my British reviewers seem to fancy: fattish in the stomach, shortish in the leg. Dr Ohlmarks, for instance, though he is reported to me to be clever and ingenious, can produce such things as this. In translating vol. i p. 12, 'they seldom wore shoes, since their feet had tough leathery soles and were clad in a thick curling hair, much like the hair of their heads', he read the text as '... their feet had thick feathery soles, and they were clad in a thick curling hair . . .' and so produces in his Introduction a picture of hobbits whose outdoor garb was of matted hair, while under their feet they had solid feather-cushion treads! This is made doubly absurd, since it occurs in a passage where he is suggesting that the hobbits are modelled on the inhabitants of the idyllic suburb of Headington.
